      🩵Essential Ingredients 🩵

Starting Fresh? Here’s What to Stock:

If you’re brand new to baking, it’s helpful to stock your fridge and pantry with a few essentials so you’re ready to dive into all the Unsifted goodness.

Below are the basics you’ll need for most Unsifted recipes—including the five Starter Kit recipe cards. These ingredients go a long way and will carry you through many, many bakes.

✨ A quick note: We built this list as if you’re starting from scratch—empty kitchen, empty pantry, empty fridge. If you already have some of these on hand, amazing! If not, no stress. This list is here to guide you, not overwhelm you.

You don’t need perfection to get started. Just a little prep and a readiness to enjoy good-for-you bread :)

      Pantry Ingredients

      1. Instaferm Yeast: This yeast is exceptional- no proofing required! We use it in all of our yeasted bread recipes including Simple Sandwich Bread, Cinnamon Rolls, Pizza Crust, Pitas, Focaccia, Pretzels, and more. This product lasts up to 1 year in the fridge or freezer once opened.
      2. Sunflower Lecithin Powder: This is an OPTIONAL ingredient in our recipes, but we do think it provides a noticeable difference in bread softness and provides additional nutrients. Fun fact: Lecithin is a natural emulsifier, so it helps spread the oils evenly throughout the bread. We use lecithin in our Simple Sandwich Bread, Tortillas + more. It's packed with natural choline too! A quick google search can show you why that may be very helpful during pregnancy and/or nursing.
      3. Baking Powder (Aluminum Free): This is a rising agent used in many recipes, including muffins and cookies. We suggest using aluminum-free for improved taste, although any will work.
      4. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: We like this one from Costco for quality and price. We look for olive oil bottled in the country of origin to ensure it wasn't secretly "cut" with another cheaper oil. We use olive oil in many of our recipes
      5. Vanilla Extract: The quiet hero of your baking (in our humble opinion)- a splash of this brings depth and warmth to cookies, brownies, muffins, banana bread, and more. It’s one of those pantry staples that makes everything taste just a little more homemade.  We prefer a pure vanilla or a homemade vanilla extract.

      Pantry Ingredients (continued)

Raw Honey: Raw honey has all the beneficial enzymes still included, and raw local honey is said to help with allergies. We use honey in bread, cinnamon rolls, pizza crust, muffins, banana bread, and more. You can also get Kirkland Brand honey at Costco.

Sea Salt: Any type of salt will work, although we prefer fine sea salt, since the magnesium and calcium may help strengthen the gluten strands.

Baking Soda: This rising agent is used in many recipes, including muffins.

Ground Nutmeg: Delicious in muffins, banana bread, cinnamon rolls, and more.

Ground Cinnamon: Used in muffins, banana bread, cinnamon rolls, and more.

Organic Cane Sugar: Many of our recipes call for granulated sugar.  You can opt for a standard white sugar, we specify cane sugar because some white sugar is actually made from beets- which are one of the most common GMO products.  Another option is to substitute a more natural granulated sugar for your recipes.  We love using Evaporated Cane Juice, sometimes known as "Honey Granules".

Chocolate Chips: Trust us, you're going to want to make our chocolate chip cookies and brownies ASAP.  These also work deliciously as a mix-in for so many of our recipes, like chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip banana bread and more!

Cocoa Powder (unsweetened): Used in our Fudge Brownie recipe.

Sucanat: This powder is an excellent replacement for brown sugar. It is a more natural cane sugar that is less refined and has a wonderful molasses taste. We can’t tell much difference taste wise, but Sarah usually gets headaches from brown sugar and does not get them from sucanat!

Any Desired Mix-Ins: Think about any fruits, nuts, or sweets you may enjoy adding to your pancakes, muffins, cookies, and brownies.  We also love adding flaked sea salt to the tops of our cookies so that's a fun add-on to have on hand to really elevate your cookie.

          Fridge Ingredients

Eggs (free range): Used in our bread, muffin, pancake, cookie, and brownie recipes.  Note: Many families successfully use an egg alternative in their baking plus for our Simple Sandwich Bread it's a completely optional ingredient.

Butter (unsalted): It's always good to have this on hand, especially for cookies, brownies, and pie crust.

Buttermilk: You can opt for liquid or dry buttermilk. Alternatively, you can substitute 1 cup milk +1 Tbsp vinegar. Sarah likes to use Vanilla Kefir (liquid yogurt) instead of buttermilk in her muffins.  Note: Many families use dairy free milk options plus the vinegar successfully to replace traditional dairy buttermilk.

          🩵 Baking Supplies 🩵

This list is a mix of essentials and a few of our favorite “love to have” items- things we reach for often in our own kitchens. But truly, if you’ve got a bowl, measuring cups, a spoon, and any kind of baking pan, you’re ready to begin. No need to have it all- just start where you are, and build as you go.

          Baking Supplies

          1. Graduated Measuring Cups: We love this style of measuring cup for liquids- it’s a game changer. The measurements are printed on an angled side, so you can read them from above. No need to crouch down and check at eye level- just pour and go. Simple, accurate, and surprisingly satisfying to use.

          2. Measuring Cups: You’ll use these primarily for measuring Unsifted Blends into the WonderMill, or for portioning other dry ingredients. They’re made of stainless steel, so cleanup is easy (dishwasher-friendly!), and the magnetic handles keep them neatly stacked- no scattering in the drawer, just simple, grab-and-go convenience.

          3. Measuring Spoons: These measuring spoons are stainless steel, so they’re easy to clean (yes, dishwasher-safe!). The magnetic handles keep them stacked together- no more rummaging around the drawer for that elusive ¼ teaspoon. Just grab and go.

          4. Cute Kitchen Scale:  It’s not required for Unsifted baking, but depending on your style, you may enjoy using one to portion dough evenly for loaves, rolls, and more. This one is super cute and a personal favorite, but some people may prefer one of their other colors or one with a glass top for ease of cleaning (although I don't have an issue with my cute bamboo one either!)

          5. Danish Dough Whisk: This dough hook is dishwasher safe and helps prevent “overmixing” for pancakes, muffins, cookies, cakes, brownies, and also beautifully mixes yeasted recipes as well.

          6. Bench Scraper: One of those simple tools that earns its keep. It’s perfect for dividing dough- whether you’re making dinner rolls, loaves, pretzels, etc. It also helps lift and move dough without sticking, and keeps your counter tidy when it’s time to clean up too.

          7. Baking Thermometer: You can be confident your breads are "done and not overdone" with this simple kitchen thermometer - makes baking even easier!

          8. Stainless Steel Mixing Bowls: There are all kinds of mixing bowls out there, and we like keeping a few different types on hand. These stainless steel ones are a favorite-they’re durable, easy to clean, and the silicone bottoms help keep them steady while you mix (no chasing your bowl across the counter). Simple, sturdy, and built to last.

          9. Pastry Cutter: Great for pie crust and flakey biscuits!

          Baking Supplies (continued)

          1. Cookie Scoop:  This scoop is great for perfectly portioned cookie dough.

          2. Muffin Scoop: This scoop is just right for perfectly portioned muffins, pancakes, cupcakes + more.

          3. Turner:  A kitchen staple for many functional purposes, such as turning pancakes, serving brownies, etc.

          4. Spatula:  Useful for a millions things from mixing muffin batter to scraping down the sides of your mixer bowl.  While standard versions absolutely get the job done, we personally love the look of these. It adds a little beauty to the moment.

          5. Pretty French Rolling Pin: Personally I just think French rolling pins are like kitchen art. I love the tapered sides to give me maximum flexibility and maneuverability when rolling out my doughs.

          6. Rolling Pin for Beginners:  If you find yourself leaning into being a precision baker, this rolling pin might be just what serves you. It comes with four colorful thickness rings (ranging from 2 to 10 mm or 1/16" to 3/8") that allow you to easily adjust the dough thickness to suit your recipes.  It's perfect if you're new to baking and feel nervous about rolling out doughs like graham crackers, pie crust, pizza crust, + more.

          7. Cooling Racks: Cooling racks are important to keep your breads and muffins from getting soggy in the pan. Once your bread comes out of the oven you will want to turn it out onto cooling racks to cool completely before storing.

            🩵Time-Saving Tools🩵

First things first: you don’t need any fancy tools to bake with Unsifted. Many of our customers make beautiful muffins, pancakes, and everyday bakes with just the basics. But if you’re baking often- or want to make the process feel a little more seamless- these tools can be a game-changer. They’re practical, durable, and fit beautifully into any lifestyle or kitchen setup.

Tools for Mixing and Kneading Dough

            1. Zojirushi Bread Machine - Virtuoso
            2. Zojirushi Bread Machine - Home Bakery Supreme

These are exceptional bread machines- especially for Unsifted’s Simple Sandwich Bread, Bagels, Japanese Milk Rolls, and more. If time is tight but you still want good-for-you homemade bread in your routine, this is a beautiful, time-saving tool.

            3. Ankarsrum Mixer: This is the ultimate mixer for doubling or tripling recipes. It can handle up to 6 lbs. of dough at a time- perfect for baking days, big families, or meal prep. Many bakers have used theirs for 20+ years; it’s truly a workhorse. The built-in timer lets you customize knead time to your preference, so you can set it and step away with confidence. And if you ever have questions, Ashley McCord (the USA rep) is wonderful to work with- knowledgeable, kind, and deeply committed to helping bakers thrive.  We recently added Ankarsrum specific instructions to the recipe cards as well for our yeasted breads.

            4. Electric Pasta Maker - for larger families

            5. Electric Pasta Maker -  for smaller families

Prefer something unplugged? The hand-crank Atlas 150 is a classic. It’s great for a relaxing, hands-on weeknight activity, and the process is just as rewarding as the meal.

            6. Artisan Baking Steel (Pizza Stone): This baking steel is a must-have for pizza, perfectly "poofed" pitas, and sourdough! I like to leave mine in my oven on a lower rack and when I want to use it I just move it up before I turn the oven on.

            7. Pizza peel w/ foldable handle for storage

            8. Tortilla Press: This press is outstanding and a must have for regular tortilla-makers! Think: breakfast burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, and tortilla chips!

            🩵 Specialty Pans + Items 🩵

            1. Ankarsrum Flaker for the Best Oatmeal: This might just be our favorite Ankarsrum attachment. Think about all the benefits of fresh flour… now imagine that same freshness and nutrition in your oats!  The grain flaker is wonderful for making fresh oatmeal from oat groats (groats are simply oats with the hulls removed). You can also flake grains to add texture and flavor to recipes, like our favorite freshly milled Monster Cookies. The result? Oats that are tender, flavorful, and full of goodness.  Once you try it, store-bought oats just won’t compare.

            2. Ankarsrum Stainless Steel Mixing BowlThis beater bowl replaces the standard plastic bowl, this one is is sturdy and easy to clean (top shelf dishwasher-safe!).  It's solid without being too heavy.  It's a beautiful addition to the mixer.

            3. Muffin Pan: No grease or liners needed and these pans are TRULY nonstick! It's a dream to just lift the muffins out! They also have a mini-muffin pan that is so cute for birthday party cupcakes so they are bite-sized and adorable.

            4. Hotdog Bun Pan: Definitely an optional pan, but it's so fun to put little rolls of dough into this pan side by side and get beautiful little hotdog shaped buns out. Who needs store-bought?

            5. Cake Pans:  The dreamiest cake pans around, seriously the cake just falls right out. If you like making round stacked cakes for birthdays or celebrations you will want to add these to your kitchen in your future!

            6. Sheet Pan: Perfect for cookies, hamburger buns, rolls,

            7. 9x13" Pan: This USA Pan is the real deal- no grease required, and nothing sticks. It’s the only one we’ve found that reliably releases focaccia without a fight, and it’s a dream for so many recipes.  We can’t recommend it enough for cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, focaccia, double-batch of brownies, cinnamon swirl cake, + more.

            8. 1lb loaf pan:  We highly recommend grabbing two of these pans, as each batch of our Simple Sandwich Bread makes two 1-pound loaves, and these pans are the perfect fit. They’re truly nonstick, so your loaves slide out effortlessly with no greasing required. No sticking or tearing just good-for-you baked bread, ready to cool and nourish

            9. 9-inch Square Pan:  We love this pan for Brownies, Overnight French Toast!

            🩵 Storage Solutions 🩵

Unsifted Blends stay fresh for a long time- as long as they’re stored properly. We recommend keeping them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. If you’re using the 5 lb or 12 lb bags and have extras, be sure to reseal the bag with a ziplock or similar airtight method between uses.
The blends themselves are absolutely beautiful. They add a quiet charm to any kitchen aesthetic. With just a little planning, your baking routine can feel even more seamless, so the joy stays front and center.

Here are a few things you may want to consider:

How much grain do you want readily available?

To make this lifestyle shift feel easy and natural, we recommend choosing a convenient location for your grain—somewhere that makes it quick and simple to use. Extra grain can be stored in a basement, pantry, or closet until you need it.

            Consider your available space:

Common storage spots include countertops, open shelving, cabinets, drawers, or pantries. Once you see how beautiful the blends are- warm, earthy, and inviting- you might decide to keep them visible, serving as both decor and function.

            Consider your container volume:

Gallon-sized containers typically hold 6–7 lbs of grain, which means fewer refills (though refilling is quick and easy). We like to keep bulk storage buckets tucked away in a cool basement or pantry, and refill our kitchen containers as needed. Unsifted makes this especially simple with buckets that feature gamma seal lids- they’re airtight and easy to open and close, even one-handed.

You can refill your bucket using our 30 lb mylar bags, which are the most cost-effective option per pound. The grain stays fresh for a long time, making this a great setup for any size household. Some families order monthly, others just twice a year, it all depends on your baking rhythm and how many mouths you’re feeding.

Do you want your grain visible or concealed?

This is the fun part. Use the notes above to guide your storage setup. Choose something practical, something beautiful, and something that fits your rhythm. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

              • Visible & Beautiful: Display your grain in big mason jars or gallon cannisters on open shelves or the countertop. It’s functional and gorgeous- plus, it’s a daily reminder to bake something nourishing.
              • Concealed & Practical: Keep gallon containers in a cabinet, pantry, or drawer, and refill them from bulk buckets stored in a cool basement or closet. Out of sight, but always ready.
              • Bulk-First Approach: Store everything in gamma-sealed buckets and scoop directly from them. This works especially well for high-volume bakers or families who go through grain quickly and have space for buckets close to their kitchen setup.

There’s no one-size-fits-all, just what fits you. Whether you bake daily or monthly, your setup should feel seamless, sustainable, and satisfying.

            Grain Storage

            1. Simple Glass Cannisters: These are a beautiful and functional choice. The wide-mouth tops make it easy to dip a measuring cup straight in- no fuss, no spills. The size is totally up to you, depending on how often you bake and how much counter space you want to dedicate. Some people keep just two for both blends, others line all three with Kamut added in.  They’re a lovely way to keep your grain visible, accessible, and inspiring.

            2. Glass Cannisters with Wooden Lid: These combine beauty and function. The wide-mouth design makes scooping easy, and the natural wooden lid adds a warm, organic touch to your kitchen. Plus, they’re airtight, so your grain stays even fresher and ready to use.

            3. Grain Buckets with Gamma Seal Lid for Convenient Access:  If you want to live life Unsifted, these buckets are a must. The gamma seal twist-off lid makes access effortless- no prying, no cracking, just a smooth twist and scoop. Each food-grade bucket comes with 30 lbs of the Unsifted Blend in a sealed mylar bag to keep it fresh.

Depending on your baking rhythm, that could last anywhere from one to six months. Either way, having grain on hand helps you ditch the “fine china” mindset- you’ll bake more freely when you’re not worried about running out.

It’s also the most cost-effective way to buy grain. And when you’re low? Just refill the bucket with a fresh 30 lb mylar bag. Easy, sustainable, and ready for whatever you’re baking next.

            4. Plastic Gallon Container: These are wonderfully versatile- great for laying flat in deep drawers or standing upright in cabinets. The built-in handle makes them easy to grab, carry, and pour, and the wide-mouth opening means you can dip a measuring cup straight in without making a mess.

            5. Cute labels for outside of containers: Let the Unsifted® Label Pack help keep your kitchen and pantry organized.  Use our beautifully designed product labels for Basic Blend, Dessert Blend and Kamut anyway you choose.  They could be a pretty and practical labeling solution for your grain storage, whether you're filling buckets, jars, or canisters.  These labels add clarity and style to your space.

            🩵 Mill Location

Where do you want to store your WonderMill?

We recommend choosing a spot that makes it easy to use- because the more accessible your mill is, the more likely you are to enjoy fresh flour in your daily cooking and baking.

We personally love keeping ours on the counter. It’s compact enough to fit easily, and it serves as a gentle reminder to nourish ourselves with whole grain goodness every day.

You can store it with or without the flour canister, on the counter or tucked into a cabinet. There’s no right answer- just what works best for your space and your rhythm.

If you’re the proud new owner of an Unsifted Starter Kit- congratulations!

We’re so excited for you to get your hands on this goodness and start experiencing the benefits of freshly milled flour for yourself. We can’t wait to see what you bake! Don’t forget to tag us @unsifted.kc if you post on social- we love cheering you on!

            Still considering jumping in?

Head over to our LEARN page for more info. Or, if you’re in research mode while waiting for your Unsifted goodies to arrive, try this:

Type “health benefits of whole grains” or “whole grains + [your concern]” into your favorite search engine. Scroll to the Harvard or medical journal articles and note how often they recommend 3+ servings of whole grains per day.

It’s kind of mind-blowing. And it’s one of the simplest lifestyle upgrades you can make- just swap your flour. Whole grain nutrition, baked right in.
